March 25: KOA Approach Avoidance

We followed the Natchez Trace Parkway as it left Mississippi and wound through (a long detour in) Alabama and into the foothills of the far west reach of the Appalachians on its way to its northern terminus just south of Nashville.  And then (drumroll)  on to a few days in a KOA "Resort".

KOA

For those of you who don't know, KOA stands for Kampgrounds of America!  We have an approach-avoidance relationship with this chain of campgrounds:

Approach
  • Friends:  We've always met great folks in all campgrounds, and KOAs are no exception.  Great for interesting conversation!
  • Kids: KOAs have pools and miniature golf.  This one also has pickle ball and all sorts of other things.  Great place to keep kiddos busy.
  • Local good stuff:  This KOA in Nashville has a downtown shuttle   Great for sightseeing.
  • Entertainment:  Usually some form; this KOA is part of a "The Road to Fame" program in which aspiring musicians play for a couple of hours and we're not charged extra for it.  Good Music.
Avoidance:
  1. Cute K's:  Someone once must have thought spelling campground with a K is cute or enticing or something.  It is not.
  2. Tents and Bathrooms:   There are very few tent spots at KOAs, and those are spots are typically tucked away where RVs and travel trailers can't go,  far from the bathroom/showers.  How does this make sense? RVs usually have their own bathrooms, yet they get the campground bathroom-proximal spaces.  Never met a tent with a toilet.
  3. Sardines:  The various sorts of vehicles that people choose to travel in are slotted together like the proverbial sardines in a can.
  4. $$$$:    KOAs charge more per night, and from our point of few provide much less than a serene park on a lake or in the woods!

Rising Stars -- clearly lots of talent is looking for fame in Nashville.
