March 26: From the Honky Tonk of Nashville to the Calmness of off-grid Great Smokey Mountains National Park
Bill continued East in Tennessee to our third National Park -- the Great Smokey Mountains. Greeted with Beltway-at-rush-hour style traffic in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, and at the visitors center inside the park, we thought we were in for the worst. Not so! Our campsite inside the park and a trip to the Tennessee/South Carolina border where the Appalachian trail goes through the park brought us very little cell reception, no weather reports, no calls from our family, and nothing to worry about. What a calm, wind down few days! Highly recommend this park and all the days you can spend there!
Elkmont Campground. Both beautiful, and we found out later, part of the history of the logging industry and a cabin colony that was there first. And a river runs through it.
