In-Situ Archeology

It turns out that parts of Vienna has been built on an old Roman city -- Vindebona -- dating from about 100 CE.   The museum allows us to go down to the original site

A drawing from the Ladies Room -- don't think it dates from 100 CE

The map -- the Danube is at the top.  The 'square' is the actual walled Vindebona.  Rest is the environs

A pair of Cupids who are thought to have held a theater banner

 A sewer grate

The heating system remains:  Fires were built under the floor and heat radiated upwards.

A Roman Sieve:

The Medieval Jewish Synagogue. -- 1421 CE. Forgotten synagogue and community, and then rediscovered.  We did not take pictures in it.  Also a modern Jewish museum to document the times after the Shoah (translates as catastrophe, but specifically refers to the Holocaust.  Both very interesting.

Cool fire extinguisher stand in the Jewish Museum

A Seder Plate based on the Vienna U_Bahn (subway)

A menorah that didn't sell well in Germany and Eastern Europe.  Based on the Grimm's brothers' tale of Little Red Riding Hood.  The Grimm's Brothers were German.

Andy Warhol paintings (there are many in Vienna) of Jewish folks who made great contributions, including Einstein and Freud.
