Vienna -- Day 3 cont'd. We 'met' Friedensreich Hundertwasser (spoiler; he died in 2000)

The artist Friednesreich Hundertwasser says:

  The straight line is ungodly!

Makes him our kind of guy!

Mark told us he can show us a nifty apartment building in Vienna's 3rd District.  We took the subway about 4 stops and walked a couple of blocks and found ourselves at the Hundertwassser-Krawina House.

This is my picture of it:

Here's the much more accurate Internet Picture of it

The floors of the public areas curve -- not sure about the apartment floors. The colored units are individual apartments, and anything grey is a public area.  Based on the concept that living is an art form, there are many public spaces that accommodate people congregating, playing,  eating, etc.

The house was commissioned by the City of Vienna for Public Housing.  PUBLIC HOUSING.  Sure looks better than what we,ve seen in the US (and we know some of you will find it too odd and will disagree with that statement). It was designed by two artists and architects: Josef Krawina and Hundertwasser.  It was unusual enough to send us about three block away to the Hundertwasser museum.

There we found  a display of Hundertwasser's art work and an exhibit about the ways in which photography has depleted the earth's supply of several metals, especially silver, and how cell phone use and digital photography (that's just data collection) is depleting other earth resources and polluting our world.  It turns out that Cloud storage produces a LOT of CO2.    This is an area we haven't really thought much about before.  Here's a clever exhibit in which I am told the facts (make this larger to read the bubbles):

His paintings were whimsical, based on his philosophy that life is in harmony with art, and both with nature.  I especially loved them!  Here's one of my favorites:

Retirement Lesson Learned:  It seems like we do like art museums -- We just like small and out-of-the-mainstream ones.  And we have a lot of photos that we need to get off the cloud!  Wish I could buy one of his works.
